No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
