The Kindness of Strangers: How a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Because my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a big ten-floor structure on the UWS known as International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student approached me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she declared: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in so many ways. I would never have had the confidence or self-belief to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
